For over 20 years I have played with this question or similar ones in nature. I firmly believe that there is no better martial art, just better martial artists. They are all just \"dances\" to different \"music.\"
Let me explain, for over 15 years I have trained in Santa Monica at Bong Soo Han\'s International Hapkido Federation, I learned many ways to apply kicks, strikes, joint locks and throws. Does that make me more versatile than a Tae Kwon Do practioner because all may have be taught were various kicking techniques? Maybe, but maybe not.
There are so many factors to be taken, the easiest comparison is how much effort each individual put into his own training and then in the heat of the moment, can he keep his head on and \"fight his fight\" and not get drawn into the other person\'s fight.
It\'s not the tools, it is KNOWING the proper application of your tools. There are only so many vectors that a human body can create regardless of the style, be it linear or circular, the joints only work within a certain range. The beauty comes in how you put it together to create the effect you want.
Of course, in the spirit of \"sharpening your sword\" you do want to be aware of the flavor of as many styles as possible, if you then label the individual in front of you as only doing those techniques that you expect are taught in that style, you have obviously made the first mistake and will most likely be on the receiving end of the unexpected.
As Masters Friske and Gannon have told me repeatedly, \"relax, be aware and respond accordingly.\"
And of course, are we talking about playing tag and sparring or are we talking about a life and death situation where we need to respond so immediately that there is really no time for the flavor to shine through in the one to three techniques used (may I never have to go there...).
HapKiDo is really the original mixed martial art because it combines locks, throws, kicking, punching, striking, ground-work as well as meditation and conditioning. TaeKwonDo, literally the way of the foot, is mostly based on kicking. Brazilian jui jitsu is mostly grappling. I feel that HapKiDo is one of the most holistic martial arts. It also depends on your teacher and your school and what they are teaching. I was lucky enough to have an incredible teacher with a very diverse background in martial arts.
