Being involved in the martial ares for over 20 years, as well as starting off in the coaching and consulting industry, all of which are basically unregulated markets, how does one express their individual competency?
For example, I have always been more interested in being proficient as compared to having rank, so in the 15 years that I was with GM Bong Soo Han, I "only" achieved the rank of 2nd dan. When I got into discussions with other martial artist we spoke of years of training as compared to belt rank, was this a "better" measure of competence or could there be yet a more honest way of communicating the thoroughness of understanding in your particular field?
I can relate to your question as the fitness industry is also somewhat of an unregulated field. Yes, there are numerous education based certifications that may be acquired to further one\'s skill set as a fitness professional, however there is no requirement for one to have any education to perform fitness coaching services. In my professional opinion, the ability to apply what is learned and transfer your knowledge to others is the real mark of competence. The best way to achieve a high level of competence in the fitness industry is to continually seek quality education. Once acquired it is essential to practice and apply the knowledge in the appropriate circumstances. Even in highly regulated industries like the medical field, where doctors must acquire the same degrees, pass the same board exams and maintain the same licenses to practice medicine, there are many different levels of competency. I believe that acquiring the knowledge is the first step... mastering it and applying it is the key!
